This observation is not about parenting per se, but ultimately it is because what we believe is what our children usually come to believe. This is inspired by a comment Shanalee made to me about some of Josh's co-workers who no longer believe in the Gospel and at times actively argue against it. There is a simple Primary song about the wise man building his house upon the rock and the house stands solid, while the foolish man builds his house on the sand and the winds and waves wash it away. Well, our house of Faith must be built on a sure foundation, and that foundation is the Word of God. In the long run, no other foundation will hold. The world today, and through most of its history, would claim we should base our beliefs and put our faith in science and man's logic. And yet a cursory look at the history of science would tell us that science changes - what was once taught as "truth" is now scorned and something else is taught as truth. I suspect that much of todays science is based in truth, but how, with my mortal logic, can I know what is and what is not . What, a hundred years from now, is going to be scorned and what is going to hold out as truth? Putting your faith in science and worldly logic is like building your house on the sand. The science shifts a little and your house comes tumbling down around you. On the other hand, you put your faith in God's word and that is a SURE foundation. It will not and does not change. It will not shift with time and the whims of the world. "And now ... remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds... when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to... endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall."(Helaman 5:12) And so, if our belief, our "house" of faith, is built upon the solid "rock" foundation of the Word of God, we can sing, "And the house on the rock stood still!" I pray it is so.
